Local
Attraction
A Historic Setting with a Warm Welcome
The 7 acre visitor attraction is open to the public 364 days a year and welcomes 35,000 visitors annually. Vincent and Sarahjayne Fletcher run the Tea Room for which serves lunches and cakes making the site a meeting point and destination. The windmill is at the heart of the site and visitors are free to explore the building.

Key Events
Circa 1814
Built from local ironstone and topped with brick, the Windmill is a five-story tower mill circa 1814. It has an ogee cap and fantail. Originally with six patent sails, known as a Six Arm Lincolnshire Cross. In 2016 the Windmill moved into it’s new phase of restoration The Living Mill, aided by European and Lottery funding.

Grade Ii Listed
The Mill ceased grinding corn (by then, powered by an engine) in 1952 but continued with cattle feed until 1960. It is one of only four six-sailed windmills remaining in the country and is now a grade 2 listed mill.

Windmill Restoration
In 1985 Nigel Moon – miller and owner of Whissendine Windmill was instrumental in the restoration as it was Nigel who rebuilt the cap of our mill bringing it to 2016 and the next phase of restoration The Living Mill, aided by European and Lottery funding.

Fresh Milled Flour
Nigel has been a dear friend to Wymondham Windmill and has now lovingly restored his own mill with the help of English Heritage. Nigel mills his own flour on a commercial basis and his fresh milled flour can be purchased from the Tearoom.

The Future
Vincent and Sarahjayne purchased the property in 2011 and would one day hope to see the sails restored. Since buying the mill they have replaced the rotten front doors and purchased 45lts of lime mortar for the internal walls, paid for by the kindness of visitors to the Windmill using the donation box near the mill entrance. In 2016 the Windmill moved into it’s next phase of restoration The Living Mill, aided by European and Lottery funding.

Our Plan
The projects over the next few years will be to replace all 11 windows to the original design allowing for more light to enter the tower and to make it water tight, replace damaged stone, redress the outer stonewalls, repair and paint the cap, and replace the fan tail enabling the cap to rotate as it was designed to do.

East Leicestershire Leader
Leader is a European funding programme designed to support rural development by providing grants to small businesses and communities. The programme will run from 2015-2020 with almost €2 million (approximately £1.5 million) available in total for the East Leicestershire area.

New Restoration
The building’s cap will be lifted off to allow essential repairs to the structure. There will be opportunities for people to learn traditional skills and be a part of this amazing building’s history. Following conservation works it will be weather tight, safe and able to tell its fascinating stories to locals and visitors alike.
Heritage Lottery Funded
Jonathan Platt, Head of HLF East Midlands, said: “The Wymondham Windmill is a rare surviving part of our agricultural heritage and a much-loved local landmark in the heart of the village. This support, made possible by National Lottery players, will not only conserve the windmill but will allow more people to learn about its importance and history for the first time.”
Thanks to National Lottery players, we invest money to help people across the UK explore, enjoy and protect the heritage they care about – from the archaeology under our feet to the historic parks and buildings we love, from precious memories and collections to rare wildlife. www.hlf.org.uk @heritagelottery

Education &
Learning
Three generations of the Wymondham community will come together to tell the story of their Mill. The whole site will be interpreted for visitors to explore the building’s significance to the local community over the last two centuries. The village primary and pre-schools will bring a younger voice to the interpretation and help develop teaching and learning resources so that the site’s educational value can be realised.
